September is National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month

Who knows what the obesity rate in kids is? Right now, in 2011, its 1 in 3 children are overweight or obese. This has tripled since the 1970's. This is not only a number that effects a child's health (physically and mentally) but a community as well (financially, physically and mentally).

This rise in obesity has prompted First Lady Michelle Obama to take on the obesity epidemic as her cause. She in turn formed Let's Move. This year President Barack Obama proclaimed September to be National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month to bring more attention to the epidemic.

Over the past two years the Let's Move campaign has partnered large corporations, community chefs, schools and parents to work together and make a change.

It's only when we see this grassroots movement do we begin to see a change in the health of our children. So I challenge you this week to look around you. In your child's school, community center or playground and see just how the children look. If you feel inspired that you can make a change and you want to help future generations stay healthy I encourage you to join the Let's Move initiative, the Food Day initiative, and even Kids Eat Right.

I will also continue to report on the issues that effect us as parents through my weekly newsletter at ABCD Eat Right.
