Hilda Hide It (Sneaking nutrition into food)

I have often made attempts to sneak in a little extra flax seed, carrots, cheese or whatever I see could easily be hidden in a recipe without any notice. Hilda spends countless hours inventing new ways to add more nutrition to her food by sneaking it in.  The children may be getting the benefits of the extra nutrients added but they are not learning about healthy foods nor are they relating the taste to a healthy food. So what is Hilda really teaching her kids? It's OK to sneak stuff? This is a habit that I would highly recommend avoiding.
So what could Hilda do?
Hilda could start looking at what her kids are eating and showing them how good it is...the real food. Instead of referring to cookbooks that sneak in a little nutrients she should refer to cookbooks like Weelicious by Catherine McCord and The Mom 100 Cookbook by Katie Workman. She could also follow Weelicious and Prevention RD on FaceBook. These books and Facebook posts are full of healthy meal ideas and beautiful food photos that will give Hilda plenty of ideas and teaching tools to instill healthy habits to last a lifetime.

Wanda the Whining Worrier

What type of parent feeding style do you have? We have talked about Lackadaisical Lucy and now we will talk about Wanda...always worried and always whining.

Wanda is stressed all of the time. She worries about everything and especially what her children eat. She is considered a helicopter parent that is constantly hoovering over her kids. She counts calories, watches fats, reads labels but constantly complains that her children are not eating right.

So what is Wanda so worried about?

In my opinion Wanda is possibly not as educated as she would like to be on the subject of nutrition. She lacks confidence and seeks approval from other parents in order to make her own decisions. This is normal, lets face it, we are all scared of messing up as parents in some shape or form.

So what should Wanda do?
She should talk to a trained professional about feeding her children (a Registered Dietitian, not an unlicensed unregistered nutritionist) to get the positive reinforcement that she needs. She needs to stop counting calories and focus on educating her children and herself. Wanda will succeed through the power of knowledge.

Why do I care about your kids health?

What will a healthy kid look like in ten years? Will they be the minority? Will heart disease, diabetes, obesity, food allergies and malnutrition be the new normal? I hope not. I know that the children and future generations that are their peers will be the ones to take care of my generation as we age. I worry that my generation as the generation X's will have to take care of both our aging parents and our unhealthy children. The time to do something about it is now. That is why I do what I do. I don't get paid much, if any, to rally for my beliefs. It will cost us more in the long run if more people like me don't stand up for our kids.

Will you help me?
I just found out the new date for 2013's Food Revolution Day! I am very excited to announce that May 17 will be the next Food Revolution Day. I have lots of ideas but I need your help. Here's what I want you to ask yourself...

If I could help, even just a little bit, what could I do to
change one small thing at my child's
school or my community?

In my dream world I will organize 3 main events: A farmers market at my son's school, a farmers market festival and a home centered pot luck with my dearest friends (maybe even throw in a viewing of the best food related documentary). Lots of work to come. But in the end I believe its all worth it!

Post your ideas or email me privately. I would love to hear them.
