What could I learn more about that would help kids?

I don't know enough about farming and gardening... but I would like to. 

Over the years our world has had less control over the farming world. Originating from hunters and gatherers and progressing to modern day consumers the basic lessons of farming have been lost. 

There is a growing surge of promotion of farming, especially promoting local and organic foods. Eventually maybe schools will cover more basics of farming, outside of agricultural type programs. I would like to eventually have a functional garden at my house and be able to assist my father with his retirement plan of farming on our family land. The more that I learn, the more that it can benefit my kids and eventually maybe even my community!
